SIUE Offers Training for Tax Preparation
A Registered Tax Return Preparer course is scheduled for Wed. & Thur., July 11–12, 2012, from 8:00 am-5:00 pm at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is requiring successful completion of the Registered Tax Return Preparer Exam in order to enter the career or continue to work as a paid tax preparer. This 2 day course teaches the topics for the IRS Examination. Each day of class is composed of 6 hours of instruction and 2 hours of pre-testing and quiz questions applicable to the test. Topics include the U.S. Individual Income Tax Return Form 1040, and approximately 45 associated tax forms, e-filing requirements, and preparer’s professional responsibilities.
According to Susan Young, CPA, class instructor, "This examination is a sweeping initiative by the Internal Revenue Service to maintain integrity and quality in the tax preparation occupation. It is designed to increase professionalism by the preparer and the collection of tax from the taxpayer. At the same time, it offers a great opportunity to people who may have thought of becoming tax preparers but were uncertain how to begin this career. The Registered Tax Return Preparer designation is the initial step toward becoming a knowledgeable tax preparer in the United States."
A selection of the topics include important qualifications, income, expenses, and credits such as: Dependency exemptions, child care, education, employee expenses, charitable contributions, injured and innocent spouse, custodial parent, health savings accounts, pre-tax deductions, individual retirement accounts, mortgage interest, real estate taxes, limits on home equity, sale of personal residence, retirement income, dividends, interest, capital gains, casualty losses, business income and expenses, business use of home and new requirements for tax preparer procedures and responsibilities.
This class is designed for anyone considering tax preparation as a potential career, those people who need to apply for a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN), and as a refresher course for current tax preparers. This class will be in a workshop format and will include all applicable materials and publications.
The fee for this class is $189 (by July 3) / $204 (after July 3) and the location is SIUE, 200 University Park, Room 1104 which is located just off the main campus. The instructor is Susan Young, CPA. For more information, call 618-334-8887 or 618-650-3209
